Where Do Emotions Live in the Body? Exploring the Connection Between Emotions and Sensations

Have you ever noticed your stomach tightening before an important conversation?
Maybe your shoulders become tense when you are under pressure. Perhaps your breathing changes when you feel anxious, or your chest feels different when you experience sadness, excitement, or fear.
We often describe emotions as something that happens in the mind.
But emotions can also be deeply connected to what we experience physically.
This is one of the reasons the connection between emotions and the body has become an important part of somatic work and body awareness.

Your Body Is Constantly Giving You Information
The body is not separate from your emotional experience.
Changes in breathing, muscle tension, posture, heart rate, temperature, and other physical sensations can accompany different emotional states.
Sometimes these changes are obvious.
Other times, they are so familiar that we barely notice them.
For example, you may always tense your jaw when you are stressed without consciously realizing that you are doing it.
You may hold your breath when something feels uncomfortable.
You may notice a heaviness in your body during emotionally difficult moments.
These sensations can become valuable information when we learn to pay attention to them.

Why Do We Sometimes Feel Emotions Physically?
Our emotional experiences involve the nervous system and the body, not only our thoughts.
When we experience something as stressful or emotionally significant, the body can respond automatically.
This is why simply telling yourself to “calm down” does not always change how you feel physically.
You may understand intellectually that you are safe, but your body may still feel tense or alert.
This is one of the reasons somatic approaches place attention on bodily experience.
Instead of only asking, “What am I thinking?”, we can also become curious about another question:
“What am I experiencing in my body right now?”

Developing Sensory Awareness
Sensory awareness means becoming more attentive to the sensations and signals arising within your body.
This does not mean analyzing every sensation or trying to give everything a specific meaning.
It can be much simpler.
You might notice your breathing.
You might become aware of tension in your shoulders.
You might recognize that your body feels more open or contracted in certain situations.
You might simply observe what changes when you slow down and pay attention.
Over time, this kind of awareness can create a different relationship with your body.

The Connection Between Body Awareness and Emotional Awareness
When we become more aware of physical sensations, we may also become more aware of emotional patterns.
For example, you might begin to notice that certain situations consistently create tension in your body.
You may recognize physical signals that appear before you consciously identify an emotion.
This does not mean every physical sensation has one fixed emotional meaning.
Instead, it creates an opportunity for curiosity.
Rather than immediately judging what you feel, you can learn to observe it.

Learning to Listen Differently
We spend much of our lives listening to thoughts, responsibilities, expectations, and external information.
Learning to listen to the body can offer another source of awareness.
This is at the heart of many somatic practices — and it is an important part of the Sensory Energetics approach.
The goal is not to separate the mind from the body.
It is to become more aware of the relationship between them.
Sometimes, the first step toward understanding an experience is not thinking about it more — but becoming more present with how it feels.

How Sensory Energetics Approaches the Body

Sensory Energetics explores the relationship between the body, sensory awareness, emotions, the nervous system, and energy.
The body becomes part of the learning process.
Rather than only talking about patterns, the work invites people to experience and observe them directly.
This experiential approach is one of the reasons Sensory Energetics training is centered around practice. You can explore the current training calendar to discover upcoming opportunities to experience the method in person.
